Exemplary digitization and indexing of historical maps and views of the SLUB and other institutions

Current statusMap Forum

Description In the project funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation), the data of the Map Forum, which up to now has been largely based on the holdings of the SLUB, has been supplemented with digitised maps and views from important partner institutions (Saxon State Archives, the library of the TU Bergakademie Freiberg and the Oberlausitzische Bibliothek der Wissenschaften Görlitz) in a qualitatively meaningful way as well as decisively expanded quantitatively. In doing so, the already existing offer for the area of Saxony in historical boundaries with maps from different centuries has been extended in depth in an exemplary manner. Extensive completeness of all existing relevant maps has also been achieved for the four Euroregions bordering Saxony today (Egrensis, Erzgebirge, Elbe, Neisse). Furthermore, with the digitisation of the approximately 6,000 Ordnance Survey sheets at a scale of 1:25,000 as well as the map of the German Empire at a scale of 1:100,000 in 674 sheets for the whole of Germany in the period between 1880 and 1924, a comprehensive cartographic basic offer for scientific use from all disciplines has been established. In the project period between 2009 and 2011, the digitisation, indexing and presentation of approx. 12,400 maps was successfully completed. With the optional insertion of a timeline and additional georeferencing (GoogleMaps) of the respective main locations of each map, a research tool has been created that serves the entire spectrum of spatial historical questions.
