Community garden

Writing, learning, gardening together in the green: all SLUB visitors are welcome in our community garden behind the TextLab. Covering 300 square metres, it encourages mindful writing or relaxed breaks. The garden also provides an inspiring backdrop for readings and workshops in the open air.

Libraries and gardens belong together: In nature, mind and body find peace and stimulation at the same time. As a green space for writing and recreation, the community garden fulfils important tasks at the SLUB - for students and library staff as well as for the city as a whole. Among other things, the library's attractive green space contributes to Dresden's sustainable development in line with the United Nations' global sustainability goals.

"If you have a garden and a library, you will want for nothing." (Marcus Tullius Cicero)

The equipment in our garden can be used for many different purposes. You can work undisturbed at the portable folding tables and chairs, WLAN included of course. Our deckchairs are just as suitable for relaxing as they are for reading exam literature. Picnic benches are available for communal breaks and can also be used for readings, workshops or outdoor writing consultations.

How you can use the community garden

Write, switch off, snack on berries - come to our garden to find peace and recharge your batteries. And that's not all you can do here!

Our offers at a glance:

  • Green learning and writing room
  • Creative breaks: take yoga mats and mediation cushions from the T3 writing room outside or recharge your batteries with a game of table tennis - balls and bats are available to borrow free of charge from the service desk!
  • Writing counselling
  • Readings and other events
  • Your own event - talk to us!
  • Community gardening: Feel free to water our plants while you're here - and pick yourself some fresh berries as a reward. If you'd like to do more, join the gardening team to continue designing and maintaining the green space.
  • Nature Writing: workshops for anyone who wants to write about nature, reading circles & events between literature, natural philosophy and natural sciences. Please contact us to find out when new dates are planned, or get in touch with us if you would like to organise a literary event on nature writing in the garden yourself.
