Saxon regional studies

Saxonica had been systematically collected at the Electoral Library, the predecessor of today's SLUB, since the end of the 18th century. Initially focused on literature on Saxon history, the term Saxonica began to extend to other fields of science as early as the 19th century, including natural history, folklore, geography, classical studies and linguistics. Today, the term encompasses publications of all media types and fields of knowledge whose content relates to Saxony in its current and historical boundaries.

How to use our offer

Research online

  • In our digital collections you have access to more than 54,000 volumes of historical sources and literature on Saxony.
  • In the portal Saxony.digital you will also find many remarkable digital copies from libraries as well as other cultural and scientific institutions in Saxony.
  • In our regional portal Saxorum we offer you a wide variety of further digital information on everyday life, culture and history in Saxony. The portal also integrates offers from other Saxon institutions.
  • The Saxon Bibliography Online functions as a central reference system and lists Saxonica in the greatest possible completeness. Here you have the possibility to search online for literature systematically recorded since the beginning of the 20th century.

Use at the SLUB

  • The central publications on Saxon regional studies can be found at any time in the reference collection Saxony/Central Germany on level 0 of the Central Library. Most of the literature there can be borrowed and is available in several copies. Publications from other subject areas are usually shelved in the open access areas of these disciplines.
  • Manuscript sources can be consulted in the reading collections by prior arrangement.
  • The extensive collection of so-called grey literature on Saxony - i.e. publications published outside the book trade - can also generally only be used in-house. These publications can be ordered via the SLUB catalogue.
  • All holdings on Saxon regional studies can be recognised in the SLUB catalogue by the logo of the Saxon Bibliography, which is integrated into the catalogue as a separate collection.
