Device operating licences
At SLUB Makerspace you can work with a wide variety of tools and devices. To use them independently, you will need to complete safety instructions and, for some, a device operating license. Read here how to acquire the certificates.
Device operating licences enable you to work safely and independently with the various tools and devices at SLUB Makerspace. You can then actively expand your newly acquired knowledge by experimenting yourself.
Good to know: Of course, working independently does not mean that you are left alone with the devices. Mistakes can happen - and our staff is happy to help and give advice.
What the device operating licence comprises:
- You learn how to handle the devices in such a way that you do not put yourself or others in danger and do not damage the devices.
- You will receive instructions for the individual devices and learn what is important when using them - for example, how a file must look like so that you can process it well with the laser cutter.
- With the device operating licence, you can book appointments for using the devices independently and flexibly without having to make a request.
Three steps to getting the device operating licence
Register free of charge for a SLUB membership. You can find out how this works here.
Complete the safety instructions training online at any time by simply watching the video and taking the test. If you pass, you will receive a certificate that is valid for six months. With the safety instructions certificate, you are allowed to use the tools with the green traffic light such as hammers, carpet knives and screwdrivers/drills at SLUB Makerspace without further instruction. In order to work on devices such as the jigsaw or the pillar drill, you must additionally watch a video tutorial. These devices are marked with a yellow traffic light.
- Devices marked with a red traffic light require a device operating licence if you want to use those without a member of staff. For certain devices you will need to both, complete an e-tutorial and attend an on-site training course. For other devices, the device operating licence consists of either an e-tutorial or an on-site training. You can complete the e-tutorials flexibly and at any time via the OPAL learning platform. Please find the dates for the on-site training courses in our event calendar. For some devices there are no regular courses - you can find information on this on the respective device pages.
More knowledge - more opportunities
With the device licence, you will know all the basics and safety rules. From now on, you will independently learn more about the device and its possibilities - by experimenting, by exchanging ideas with other newcomers or advanced users at SLUB Makerspace and by acquiring further knowledge in our course reserve collection or via our e-learning courses. All learning opportunities are available to you as a registered SLUB member free of charge.
What are the costs to use the devices?
Most of the devices are available to you free of charge at SLUB Makerspace. For some devies we take small fees. We will provide you with the material for 3D printing. You must bring all other materials yourself. For tests, there are leftover materials at SLUB Makerspace that you can use free of charge.
