Sources on Klemperer in the Dresden University Archives

Since many files relating to the period before 1945 were lost during the war in the University Archive of the Dresden University of Technology, not everything relating to Victor Klemperer has been preserved there. However, there are some interesting documents and resources that should be pointed out here. The archive's holdings relating to Klemperer can be accessed via the electronic finding aid.Furthermore, the University Archive makes available some documents and databases that are of importance for a study of the person and Professor Klemperer.

  1. Klemperer's personnel file from the post-war period (II/464), which contains his personnel questionnaire, a curriculum vitae, his application for reinstatement, salary notices, expert opinions and official correspondence up to his dismissal in 1947, as he accepted a professorship in Greifswald due to the non-reinstatement of the Chair of Romance Philology at the TU by the SMAD.

  3. The honorary doctor database is an internal archive tool whose data can be made available on request. It contains detailed sources on Klemperer's life.

  7. A paper on Klemperer's graduation from the District Party School of Marxism-Leninism, 18th course, 1984/1985, discusses Klemperer as a university teacher, active cultural politician and humanist. It is an early testimony to Klemperer's reception in the GDR and also contains further bibliographical information. (J. Kappel, A. Schier: "Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c.. Victor Klemperer - a tribute to his life and scientific work", Inv. N. 1356).

  10. Another source exists in the University Archive, namely a video cassette of the film broadcast on Arte in 1999: "Mein Leben ist so sündhaft lang". Through eyewitness accounts, diary excerpts and historical film footage, the original scenes of Klemperer's life were brought back to life here. The epilogue is devoted to Klemperer's GDR years.
