"Blossom, German Florence!" Dresden and Italy

In 1802, Johann Gottfried Herder described the city of Dresden as the "German Florence" in his "Adrastea", which had become the equal of the Italian art metropolis thanks to the art treasures collected during the Augustan era. The diverse relationships between "Florence on the Elbe" and Italy are manifested not only in the art collections and architecture of Dresden, but also in the holdings of the SLUB, as the exhibited manuscripts, prints, maps, views, music and photographs from seven centuries show.
