Maps

Besides valuable historical maps, the Map Collection particularly comprises maps of Saxony as well as topographical maps of Germany and Europe. Additionally, it contains numerous panoramic views from the 17th to the 19th century. At the moment, the collection involves approximately 180,000 maps and views. About 24,800 of the most important cartographical sources in the collection – especially those pertaining to Saxon history and regional studies – are currently available in high resolution digital images in the Map Forum. The new portal Virtuelles Kartenforum 2.0 has been developed in cooperation with the Chair of Geodesy and Geoinformatics at the University of Rostock as part of a DFG project in 2014. The forum provides access to large parts of the SLUB’s historical map collection and enables users to take part in the georeferencing of historical maps.
