Everything under control – pick up, borrow, and return media yourself: our self-service options give you flexibility.

Items that have been reserved and ordered from the closed stacks will be made available to you in our self-service areas. At the Fiedlerstrasse/Medicine and Tharandt/Forestry locations, you can pick them up at the service desks.

The pick-up location can be seen in your SLUB-account after the item has been made available.

Our self-service areas are divided into numbered compartments into which the item available for retrieval have been sorted. You will find the item you've requested in the section labeled with the last two digits of your user ID number or the University ID of your Campuscard. The pick-up shelves for newspapers are located in the Newspapers and Periodicals section on level -1 of the Central Library.

You can check out these items at the self-service checkout machines. Books that cannot be borrowed from outside the building can be identified by the red insert ("Präsenz"). They can be used in the respective building during opening hours.
Items which you do not wish to check can either be left on the shelf or placed on the nearest return cart. They can also be returned to the service desk.

Items that are not available on the self-service shelves can be obtained at the service desks. This includes interlibrary loans, DVDs, CDs and microforms.

All items available for loan from the open stacks, the textbook collection, or requested items that are ready for you on the self-service areas, can be checked out at the self-checkout machines.

You need your PIN to use them.

To be able to borrow items from the self-service machines, you need your SLUBCard or your Campuscard and a personal four-digit PIN, which you set in your SLUB account. You can find out how to do this here or watch our tutorial.

You can renew your borrowed items online in your user account: place a tick in the checkbox next to the item in question and then click on "Renew". Note that the new loan period always starts from the day of the triggered renewal. Reload the page and make sure that the new loan period date appears.

Where can you return items borrowed from outside the library?

  • At the return machine in the Central Library (foyer)
  • At the self-checkout machines in the Central Library (near the self-service area)
  • At the self-checkout machines at other SLUB locations

Please return damaged books, CDs, DVDs, and other AV media, as well as interlibrary loans, in person at the service desk.

When can items be returned?

  • At the machines: during the opening hours of the respective SLUB location.
  • At the service desk: during the service hours of the respective SLUB location.

Items can be returned at any SLUB location, regardless of where they were borrowed.
