The SLUB started buying books in easy language (German) in 2024. In order to make these books easily accessible, the SLUB has set up an extra location in the Central Library. Based on the coordination office alfa-sachsen.de, we have labeled the collection with the abbreviation ALFA. This special location contains bestsellers, literary classics and award-winning non-fiction books that have been translated into simple and easy-to-understand German. The target group is anyone learning German as a foreign language, but also people who want to improve their reading skills as adults.

The SLUB has books, magazines, photos, CDs and other things. They are all called materials (Media). Most of the materials in the SLUB can be borrowed. This means you can take them home and read, look at or listen to them there.

Materials that are freely accessible are on the shelves. You can simply take them. All books with a yellow sticker can be borrowed. Books with a red sticker or a red dot above the yellow sticker may only be used in the library. You cannot borrow them.

These materials cannot be borrowed:

  • works that are not in a hard cover,
  • newspapers and magazines,
  • loose-leaf collection
  • microforms and
  • works that are intended for students this semester.

Some materials cannot be borrowed for other reasons. For example, because of

  • their size
  • their weight or
  • because they are very old and can break quickly.

Not all materials are on our shelves. Because there is not enough space, many materials are in the closed stacks. This is a storage area for books in a library. You can order the materials in these closed stacks in the SLUB catalogue. Our staff will then take the materials to the collection shelves. There you can pick them up and borrow them. You can recognize such materials in the catalogue by an orange plus + under the book.

You can collect your orders during these times:

  • If you order Monday to Friday before 1 p.m., you can collect your order on the same day.
  • If you order after 1 p.m., you can collect your order the next day. You will not receive orders at the weekend.
  • If you order on Friday after 1 p.m., you will receive your order on Monday.

You have 5 days to collect your order.

You must log in to place an order. Then click on ORDER.

You can borrow your materials yourself from the self-service machines.
If the service counter is open, you can also borrow materials there.

You need a PIN number to borrow materials from the self-service machines.
Log in. Select "Pin for machines". You can set a PIN number there. Save this PIN.

 

You can then always use the PIN for the self-service machines.

This is how borrowing from the self-service machines works:

  1. Insert the card.
  2. Select: Borrow or Return.
  3. Enter the PIN on the number field.
  4. Place the book with the barcode facing upwards. Then pull it slowly over the scan bar to the end.
  5. Print the receipt and you're done. :)

Not all Materials can be borrowed. You can read them in the library rooms. You can recognize such Materials by a red sticker. Some Materials from the stacks cannot be borrowed. In this case, the catalogue will say "To be used in the library".

Sometimes materials are already on loan. Then you can reserve them (put them on hold) in the SLUB catalogue. You will then receive the material as soon as it has been returned. You can choose which of our libraries you would like to collect it from.

As soon as the material has been returned, you will receive a message from us. We will send you an e-mail or a letter. You pay the postage for a letter.

You then have 5 days to collect the item.

You can normally borrow books, audio media and video media for 28 calendar days.

You can return borrowed materials to any of our libraries free of charge. Even if you have borrowed them from another SLUB location. You can also return materials at the return machine when the service desk is closed.

It may be that you cannot find the work you are looking for in our library. You can order it as an interlibrary loan. If you think that the SLUB should buy the work, please send us a PurchaseTip. The SLUB specialist department responsible will then decide whether the work should be purchased. This is also possible if

  • a material cannot be ordered via interlibrary loan or
  • if the SLUB owns the work but all materials are on loan.

If you cannot find a material in the SLUB catalogue, you can order it as an interlibrary loan. To do this, you must search for it in the recherch portal and order it.

If you cannot find your material there either, enter the title in the "Free entry form".

Sometimes works are listed in the search portal that cannot be borrowed. It is best to check the online catalogue of the library from which you wish to borrow, so that you know whether the materials are on loan from the library.

As a rule, the materials will be with us in 1 to 2 weeks. Each order costs €1.50.
