Journals & Proceedings

Would you like to publish a quality-assured Diamond Open Access journal or conference series and need support in implementing this? Then you've come to the right place!

We offer our services relating to the founding and transformation(flipping) of existing scientific journals and proceedings into Diamond Open Access for various target groups. Regardless of which of our products you choose, you as the publisher retain the rights to the title of the journal and unrestricted editorial control over its content.

We support you in managing and publishing your own Open Access journal or conference proceedings. We use the open source software Open Journal Systems, which covers the most important steps in the publishing process: Website design, editorial management, submission of articles, the organization of multi-step review processes, publication of articles and more. We provide the platform for you, take care of the technical operation and support you with the implementation. You take care of the content and quality assurance. If you have special requirements for your journal in terms of functionality and design, we will implement them together if possible.

From the idea to the journal or conference proceedings: overview of the process

  1. You contact us with your project at diamondoa@slub-dresden.de.
  2. We will conduct an initial meeting lasting approximately one and a half hours. You give us a brief outline of your project (5 minutes) and we present our services. We will show you the possibilities offered by the OJS journal management software and how the tasks are divided between you and us for your publication project.
  3. You create a journal concept / conference proceedings concept based on our questionnaire. We will be happy to discuss any open questions.
  4. After successfully reviewing your concept, we will create an OJS test instance for you. We will then have already inserted important text modules - such as a data protection declaration valid in Saxony. Here you can try out different designs for your journal website, get to know the publication workflow, enter all the necessary texts and make settings.
  5. Contact us at least two weeks before your target publication date and we will check your journal website for formal criteria.
  6. If all criteria are met, we will mirror your test instance to a productive instance, make the final necessary settings and apply for an ISSN and DOI prefix.
  7. Your journal website / conference proceedings website is now online and can be found by search engines.
  8. After you have informed us about the publication of the first scientific content, we will take care of other necessary tasks such as checking the e-obligation and submitting the data to the DNB.
  9. We keep an eye on your journal/conference proceedings and support you in indexing your journal or conference proceedings in relevant databases.

You will soon find more detailed information on the distribution of tasks between you and us under Workflows.

Quality-assured databases, organizations and verification systems

Your journal or conference proceedings can apply for inclusion in databases if the relevant criteria are met. Databases such as the DOAJ or COPE signal to writers and readers that the publication medium is a peer-reviewed journal or conference proceedings. To make this visible, some databases award individualized badges that can be presented on the corresponding websites.

The DOAJ stands for visibility and reach. By being listed in the DOAJ, the journal or conference proceedings can be found in a worldwide database that is actively used by researchers, libraries and funding organizations. The DOAJ listing enhances the journal's reputation in the scientific community. It is a seal of quality and trust, as inclusion in the DOAJ signals that the journal or conference proceedings meet basic criteria for transparency, quality and openness. This strengthens credibility with authors, readers and institutions, which indirectly promotes visibility, citations and impact. Many funding bodies and universities recommend or require publication in DOAJ-listed journals. In addition, DOAJ data is reused by numerous services (library catalogs, indexing services, metrics providers), which in turn increases visibility.

COPE stands for Committee on Publication Ethics. Receiving the COPE seal shows that the journal or conference proceedings are clearly committed to ethical standards in publishing. This builds trust among authors, readers, libraries and funding institutions. COPE membership is considered a mark of quality and is internationally recognized in the scientific community. It provides access to training, workshops and resources that strengthen editorial teams professionally, as well as exchange with a large network of publishing and editorial professionals. COPE offers advice and recommendations on how ethical problems can be solved transparently and fairly, and increases the professionalism and ability to act of the editorial team.

Badges and awards

If authors of your own journal reach certain milestones, you can award badges to the respective articles. This is an award for the authors, shows appreciation and increases the visibility of the goals achieved - such as open data or open code.

Open Science Badges are valuable because they create visible recognition for transparent research practices, encourage disclosure of data, materials and registration, help to embed open practices as a standard, strengthen trust in science, are easy to implement, free of charge and yet effective (Kidwell et al, 2016).
