More Makerspace for everyone
Starting on October 6th 2025 the SLUB Makerspace will have new opening hours. We have listened to the wishes you expressed in the past years and react with new opening hours and more flexibility for you.
New times, new opportunities
The SLUB Makerspace has been in existence at the SLUB Dresden for 10 years. Between an atlas reading room and a fully equipped workshop lies an eventful path with constant changes. Over the last 10 years, the equipment pool has grown and new ideas and synergies are constantly emerging. We have also heard your wishes, e.g. regarding uninterrupted opening hours and more flexible booking processes. It is therefore time to make adjustments to meet these changes and your wishes.
With new opening hours from October 2025, you will have new options for using the equipment in the Makerspace. With a simplified booking process for equipment and a PC pool for preparing files for the laser cutters and 3D plastic printers, more people will have the opportunity to actively work on the equipment. More makerspace for everyone!
We have summarized all the information you need for your work in the Makerspace from October 2025 for you here.
As usual, we will adjust our opening hours during the semester break: Monday and Friday will be closed.
Specifically: What will change and what will remain the same?
With the new opening hours, a few points will also change with regard to working on the laser cutter and 3D plastic printer and booking all devices in the SLUB Makerspace. We are introducing a fixed, maximum number of supervised appointments on the 3D plastic printer and the laser cutter per person and are offering more equipment driving license appointments to introduce you to working with the equipment. Of course, you do not have to attend any supervised appointments at all, but can take the equipment driving license straight away.
Use of equipment
During the new opening hours, all devices in the SLUB Makerspace will be available to you as usual.
As usual, we work with the traffic light system: To use "green" equipment, you must present the certificate for the occupational safety instruction. To use "yellow" devices, you must also watch a video tutorial. To use "red" equipment, you need an equipment operator's license. You can find out which conditions apply to which device or what the respective device license looks like on the respective device booking pages. With the device license, you can work independently on the devices, consolidate your knowledge and work more flexibly on the device.
As usual, we offer supervised appointments on the laser cutters and 3D plastic printers for people without a device license.
What's new:
- There is now a maximum number of supervised appointments per person. During the supervised appointments, we work together on the device so that you can slowly feel your way around. After that, you will need a device license for the laser cutter or the 3D plastic printer. Of course, you don't have to attend any supervised appointments, but can get your device license right away.
- There is now a PC pool where the files for the laser cutter and the 3D plastic printer are prepared. The preparation of the files no longer falls within the booked time on the device.
Device booking
As before, appointments for devices with a device license ("red" devices) are booked via our room booking system . The booking for all these devices except electronic workstations, laser cutters and 3D plastic printers remains as before. The following still applies: You can book appointments at least 2 weeks in advance.
What's new:
- The electronics workstation can also be booked directly via the room booking system with a device license.
- There are now different booking calendars for each device group: 3D plastic printing, laser cutters and other devices (3D scanners, sewing machines, electronic workstations, polystyrene cutters, etc.).
- Even people without a device license can now book appointments for the laser cutter directly in the room booking system. The files must be uploaded and the appointment approved by the Makerspace staff.
- You can now book appointments at even shorter notice. The deadline of at least 24 hours in advance no longer applies.
New for laser cutter bookings
- Each person receives a maximum of 2 hours of supervised appointments at the laser cutter. After that, an equipment license is required to work on the laser cutter.
- Supervised appointments are available on Tuesdays from 1 pm to 4 pm and on Thursdays from 4 pm to 7:30 pm.
- With an equipment license, you can book the laser cutter for a maximum of 1 hour per day and a maximum of 2 hours per week.
- With an equipment license, you can now book both laser cutters, "Edgar" and "George", independently and use them during our opening hours. Only on Tuesdays from 1 to 4 pm and Thursdays from 4 to 7:30 pm do you have to make booking requests for "Edgar" via the contact form. Otherwise you can always book independently.
- Brand new for people with a device license: On Mondays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., you can get 20 minutes of laser time without booking an appointment! There is a waiting list to see whose turn it is.
New with the 3D plastic printer booking
- Each person gets a maximum of 4 supervised print starts on the 3D plastic printer. After that, a device license is required to work on the 3D plastic printer.
- Supervised appointments are possible on Tuesdays from 4 to 7:30 pm and on Thursdays from 1 to 4 pm. During this time, a maximum of 4 prints can be started, i.e. 4 appointments can be allocated to different people.
- With a device license, you can book 3 appointments per week on any 3D printer. A booking is valid for a maximum of one day. The files must be uploaded to the room booking system at least 24 hours before the appointment.
Advice
As always, we are happy to support you with questions and uncertainties on site, by e-mail and via the knowledge bar.
Here you can find more information on occupational safety and equipment operator's licenses and here you can find our e-tutorials in OPAL.

FAQs
This questionnaire answers many questions about the new features.
Your question is not included? Simply write to us at makerspace@slub-dresden.de!
Are there still equipment operator licenses?
Yes, even more than before! Wednesdays, which will be closed from October, are primarily so that we can offer more regular equipment operator courses. You can find the e-tutorials in OPAL. The dates for the practical instruction on site in the Makerspace event calendar.
Do I still need health and safety training?
Yes, as usual, we work with the traffic light system: To use "green" devices, you must present the certificate for the occupational safety instruction. To use "yellow" equipment, you also need to watch a video tutorial. To use "red" equipment, you also need an equipment operator's license. You can find out which conditions apply to which device or what the respective device operator's license looks like on the respective device booking pages. With the device operator's license, you can work independently on the devices, consolidate your knowledge and work more flexibly on the device.
To obtain the certificate for occupational safety instruction, please watch the video first and then complete the knowledge test.
Why is Wednesday completely closed?
With a full closing day, we can offer a whole day of specific equipment operator courses, which in turn allows you to book appointments more flexibly. The more equipment operator courses we can offer, the more people have the chance to get a place and be trained to work independently on the equipment. This also fits in with the newly introduced maximum number of supervised appointments per person .
What about the closing times on Monday and Friday?
We are still open for you on Mondays and Fridays from 9 am to 12:30 pm. After that, we also use the time to offer equipment operator courses, for other events or to make the room and equipment available for courses. The equipment also needs to be serviced regularly. We take care of this during the closing times.
Are there any changes to the use and booking of devices with a device license?
Yes, all equipment can now be booked at short notice via the room booking system - including the electronic workstation! The booking deadline of at least 24 hours in advance no longer applies. The booking deadline of 14 days in advance at the earliest remains.
There are changes to the use and booking of the laser cutter and the 3D plastic printer for people with a device license. Everything remains the same for all other devices.
New with the laser cutter is
... that you can now book both "Edgar" and "George" yourself via the room booking system for all days during our opening hours. Only on Tuesdays from 1 to 4 p.m. and Thursdays from 4 to 7:30 p.m. do you still need to make a request for laser cutter "Edgar" via the contact form. You also only need to book an appointment on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Open Lasercut takes place on Mondays and Fridays: As a device license holder, you can come by for lasercutting during these times without an appointment. You register as usual with the Makerspace staff using your SLUB or Campuscard and will be assigned a time slot and a laser cutter.
At Open Lasercut, a time slot is set for a maximum of 20 minutes by default so that as many people as possible have the chance to laser cut their files. If there is no queue, you can laser cut for longer than 20 minutes. The files are no longer prepared on the computers on the device itself, but on the newly introduced PC pool, which is also located in the Makerspace.
As the preparation time of the files no longer falls within the booked appointment, you can book a maximum of one hour per day and a maximum of 2 hours per week at the laser cutters. The preparation of the files takes place at the PC pool, which is available for you before the start of the appointment.
So a laser cutter license is now even more worthwhile! You can book both laser cutters yourself and use them during all opening hours with or without an appointment!
New with the 3D plastic printer
You can now book 3 appointments per week on all available devices, provided you have a device license. A booking is valid for a maximum of one day. The files can be uploaded directly to the room booking system when booking an appointment. However, they must be uploaded at least 24 hours before the start of printing. The contact form will still be available if this does not work.
You can find a general overview in the graphics. Click on the image to open a picture gallery and enlarge the images.
Are there any changes to the use and booking of devices without a device license?
Yes, what's new is that you can now create appointments for the laser cutter yourself in the room booking system and also upload your files there. The contact form will still be available if it does not work via the booking system. The Makerspace team will approve the appointment by e-mail and provide feedback on the files if necessary. Requests for supervised appointments on the 3D plastic printer are still made via the contact form .
Another new feature is that there is a maximum number of supervised appointments on the laser cutter and 3D plastic printer per person. The supervised appointments also take place at fixed times.
The set times for supervised appointments on the laser cutter are Tuesdays from 1 to 4 pm and Thursdays from 4 to 7:30 pm.
The set times for supervised appointments at the 3D plastic printer are Tuesdays from 4 to 7:30 pm and Thursdays from 1 to 4 pm.
You will receive a maximum of 2 hours of supervised laser time at the laser cutters. On the 3D plastic printers, there is a maximum of 4 supervised appointments for a print start. After that, you will need a device license to work on the device.
You can see the times in the weekly overview in the graphic.
Why is there now a maximum number of supervised appointments per visitor?
The supervised appointments are intended to make it easier to get started or to facilitate one-off projects. One of our goals is to impart knowledge about appliances and manufacturing techniques to as many people as possible. With the supervised appointments, we can allay fears, spark interest and facilitate the first steps on the device. To ensure that there is more makerspace for everyone, everyone gets the same number of supervised appointments.
What is "Open Lasercut" all about?
In simple terms, "Open Lasercut" means: laser cutting with a device license, but without booking an appointment. From October 2025, there will be fixed times when this is possible: Mondays and Fridays from 9 am to 12:30 pm.
How does the "Open Lasercut" work on Mondays and Fridays?
With "Open Lasercut" you can laser cut on Mondays and Fridays from October (only!) with a device license, but without prior device booking. Spontaneous laser cutting is no longer a problem! There will be a queue to ensure that everything runs smoothly. As usual, you will register with the Makerspace staff using your SLUB or Campuscard and will be allocated a time slot and a laser cutter. This will probably be displayed on a screen.
By default, a time slot is scheduled for 20 minutes so that as many people as possible have the chance to laser cut their files. If there is no queue, you can laser cut for longer than 20 minutes. The files are no longer prepared on the computers on the device itself, but on the newly introduced PC pool, which is also located in the Makerspace.
Can I really only laser for a maximum of 20 minutes with "Open Lasercut"?
At Open Lasercut, a time slot of 20 minutes is set as standard so that as many people as possible with a device license have the chance to laser their files. If there is no queue, it is possible to laser for longer than 20 minutes. The files are no longer prepared on the computers on the device itself, but on the newly introduced PC pool, which is also located in the Makerspace.
I have an equipment license. I need more time on the laser cutter or more time on the 3D printer. Is that possible?
The limitation to a maximum of 1h laser time per day and 2h laser time per week, or a maximum of 3 print starts per week, is intended to enable as many people as possible to get laser time and print time. If the devices are free, it is also possible to use them beyond the maximum time. If this is the case, please contact us on site or by e-mail.
What is the new PC pool?
PC pool refers to a PC island in the SLUB Makerspace: several computers that are available to prepare files for laser cutting or 3D plastic printing. This means that the devices are not blocked by the preparation of the files, but are only booked for you when you are actually lasercutting or printing. This means that more people can laser cut during opening hours, especially at the laser cutter.
Will the fees for using the devices change?
No. All fees remain the same. You can find a list of fees on the Fees and terms of use page.
How do I book an appointment at the 3D plastic printer?
Without equipment license
Supervised appointments on the 3D plastic printer take place as follows:
- Tuesday: 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
- Thursday: 1 to 4 p.m.
You have a quota of four supervised appointments for 3D plastic printing. After that, you will need the 3D plastic printing equipment license to work on the 3D plastic printers.
