What the SLUB has to offer as an employer

Wissen bewahren. Zukunft gestalten. Gemeinsam arbeiten.
Was wir Ihnen bieten
-
Community
... is important, fun and productive!
That’s why we organise our work in a way that fosters connections between our employees, not just within teams but across the entire SLUB:
- World Cafés, where new colleagues can introduce themselves and network with the ‘old hands’
- an annual team day featuring team-building activities, shared meals and drinks
- Christmas party: ‘the SLUB Bazaar’
- Interdisciplinary teams that transcend hierarchies and departments
- An onboarding programme where new people get a mentor to support them
- Once a year, we organise a cycling festival at the Central Library in collaboration with local clubs, featuring bike repair workshops and lots of information on cycling

different stages of life
... come with varying needs (and challenges) in one’s private life.
That is why, as part of the Work-Life Balance Audit and in cooperation with TU Dresden, the SLUB is doing its part to help employees balance the personal challenges of different stages of life with their work:
- Flexible working hours between 6 am and 10 pm, with recommended core working hours between 9 am and 3 pm (Mon–Thu) or 9 am and 2 pm (Fri)
- Remote working
- Part-time work with a guarantee of return to full-time employment
- Winter holiday childcare for schoolchildren
- Events on topics such as healthcare and retirement provision
- A programme to maintain contact during planned leave or in special life circumstances
-
Healthcare
... is the engine that drives enthusiasm for work and the foundation for good performance.
That is why we offer a wide range of benefits that support good health:
- Compensatory time off for overtime
- Preventative healthcare services
- Fitness breaks
- Participation in the REWE Team Challenge
- TU Health Day
- Extensive sports and counselling programme at the TU
- 30 days’ annual leave, plus the 24th and 31st December off in addition
- Talent Development and Employee Coaching
- Meals at staff discounts in the various canteens on the university campus
-
Transparency
... is the key to our growth.
Shared knowledge transforms people and opens up opportunities. Openness as a guiding principle is therefore a key part of our strategy; ‘Open to new ideas’ is one of our leadership principles. We put this value into practice both internally and externally:
- Documenting and discussing work outcomes on the SLUB social intranet
- participatory events, e.g. on corporate strategy
- A positive error culture, which is also embedded in our leadership principles
- openness to and supportive onboarding of career changers
- free access to our events, which are non-ideological and open to all
- starting with the job advertisement: transparent salary structures
- Promoting all aspects of Open Science, including, in particular: strategic support for Open Access, i.e. ensuring that researchers make their findings freely available to their communities and society through and in collaboration with us
- Provision of open, linkable data (Linked Open Data), use of open-source software
- Development and institutional support for Citizen Science, i.e. research by citizens for citizens
-
Awards and accolades
... carry a certain weight.
As one of the largest and highest-performing academic libraries in Germany, we’ve built up quite a collection over the years. And yes, we’re a little proud of that, too:
- Ort der Ideen, 2009
- Makerspace-Award
- Best-Practice-Award, 2014 at the Librarians’ Day for the SLUB’s ‘Wissensbar’. Criteria: innovative strength, exemplary nature, and real-world application
- Data Seal of Approval, June 2016, for the digital long-term archive
- Open Library Badge, 2016 – an award for libraries that champion greater openness in academia and society
-
Knowledge
... kann man nie genug haben!
After all, who knows better than us what knowledge can achieve and just how valuable it is? That’s why we place great emphasis on professional development opportunities:
- in-house training courses and seminars, such as on digital skills and leadership topics
- collaboration with Saxony’s State Training Centre
- support for attending conferences and symposia
- funding and recognition of external training courses and professional development opportunities as working time
- SLUB forums: monthly discussions on topics such as Open Access, the upcoming website relaunch, or research data management
- regular Open English Classes with colleagues during working hours
- structured and professional staff development

Gemeinschaft & Onboarding

The Saxon State Library - Dresden State and University Library is centrally located in an international setting on the campus of the University of Excellence, aka the Dresden University of Technology. Dresden's main railway station, the historic Old Town with the Zwinger, the Semper Opera House and the Church of Our Lady, and the Elbe meadows are all a short bike ride away from the central library. Those who do not come to work by bike or car and instead use the company's own parking spaces can obtain a job ticket through the SLUB. As a state-owned enterprise of the Free State of Saxony, the SLUB is a public service employer: our employees are paid according to the collective agreement of the Länder TV-L, thus benefiting from the regular collective bargaining rounds and enjoying further advantages such as an active staff council, very good social benefits (e.g. additional pension insurance via the supplementary pension fund of the Versorgungsanstalt des Bundes und der Länder VBL), capital-forming benefits and a special annual payment in November. A calculator for public service salaries can be found here. In addition to the central library at Zellescher Weg, the departmental library DrePunct as well as the branch libraries Medicine, Law, Education and Forestry also belong to the SLUB. The priority for SLUB's strategy is not profit maximisation, but sustainable, common good and future-oriented services to the students and teachers of TU Dresden and the citizens of Dresden and Saxony - because we are convinced that knowledge in its many different forms is an indispensable component of social participation today and would like to offer it as barrier-free and low-threshold as possible.
