August Wilhelm Schlegel (1767-1845)

Literary critic, translator and Indologist, born on 5 or 8 September 1767 in Hanover, died on 12 May 1845 in Bonn.

August Wilhelm Schlegel is regarded as an important mediator of Romantic thought and, together with his brother, the philosopher and writer Friedrich Schlegel (1772-1829), rendered outstanding services to early Romanticism.

The estate comprises several thousand letters in 159 units, was acquired in 1873 and was expanded in 1998.
