SAVE - Safeguarding the audiovisual heritage in Saxony
Since 2019, SLUB has been involved in the state programme SAVE for the preservation, digitisation and provision of historical film, video and audio recordings from Saxony. To date, more than 100,000 minutes of footage have been digitised, catalogued and made accessible to future generations in collaboration with 50 different project partners.
About SAVE
As part of the state program, the SLUB is working together with the Saxony Film Association, which had already launched a pilot phase in 2016 to safeguard the audiovisual heritage. The SLUB acts as a coordination office, plans the respective project process, evaluates the legal situation and creates public access by entering the digitized media into national catalogs and making them available in the online media library of the SLUB. The program is financed by the Saxon State Ministry for Science, Culture and Tourism from budget funds of the Free State of Saxony.
The analog material
The analog film, video and sound media come from very different sources: from private collections, associations, city archives, libraries and local television stations as well as from museum collections of national and international importance.
The project process
For the digitization of the various materials (magnetic sound tapes, film from 8 mm to 35 mm, DIY gramophone records, video tapes), the SLUB commissions experienced external specialist service providers. The program participants – i.e. the owners of the analogue source material – take over the clarification of rights with regard to the presentation and content indexing of the sources with the help of the coordination office. Do you own analog film, video or sound recordings and would like to preserve them? Then find out more about participating in the SAVE program.
