Information for project partners

Film reels, audio tapes, video cassettes ...

The SAVE project team is constantly looking to expand the stock of digitised material from Saxon sources. Are there old film and sound recordings waiting to be rediscovered in your archive or attic? We would be happy to work with you to digitise, make accessible and digitally secure analogue sources that document special events or everyday life in Saxony.

Our cooperation ...

takes place in many steps, which we master together with you:

The SAVE programme provides digitisation, cataloguing, long-term digital archiving and presentation services, including the associated costs.

Digitisation

... is carried out by external service providers with many years of experience and specialist staff who have worked for major cinematheques, large broadcasting companies and small collections. Digitisation is carried out according to current international standards. The result is high-resolution, unprocessed archive files as well as processed usage files that meet the requirements of the professional sector.

Cataloguing

The digitised media are made searchable in the SLUB catalogue and large union catalogues.

Digital presentation

In addition to the presentation by you, the media will be made publicly accessible in the digital collection of the SLUB media library (and in the medium term on sachsen.digital). In individual cases, media will only be usable at the electronic reading place at the SLUB if there are legal restrictions.

Digital long-term archiving

The SLUBArchiv is one of the leading institutions for the preservation of digital cultural data: https: //slubarchiv.slub-dresden.de/.

An important prerequisite for cooperation is your involvement, in which we support you in an advisory capacity. Your cooperation services include:

Material selection

Only analogue AV media that are not already available elsewhere in sufficient quality will be considered. In the case of media of which several copies exist (e.g. educational films in other collections), only the copy with the best quality will be digitised.

Rights clearance

A central goal of digitisation is public non-commercial access. For this purpose, rights of use may have to be obtained from third parties.

Indexing information

Media are only accessible if they are easy to research. For the purposes of cataloguing, information on the contents, the year of production and the persons involved, among other things, must be provided.

Preservation of original materials

There is more than one hundred years of experience on the durability of film material in good storage, but not on the preservation of digital data. Despite the highly professional digital long-term archiving in the SLUB archive, the digital preservation of analogue content is an important step, and the preservation of the original materials after the end of the project is even more important.

Contact

Please feel free to contact us to clarify the possibilities of participating in the SAVE programme. We need the following brief information from you at the beginning:

  • What can (presumably) be seen and heard on the material?
  • What kind of material is it (8mm film reels, VHS tapes, audio tapes,... )?
  • How many reels/cassettes and how many minutes does the material contain?
