Magnificent, festive Dresden

Maurice of Saxony’s (1521–1553) rise to the position of prince-elector in 1547 saw the city of Dresden become a royal residence. His brother, Elector Augustus (1526–1586), continued his ambitious plans to convert the palace, and the city on the Elbe transformed into a centre of politics and culture. The founding of the electoral collections played a major part in this. The present-day SLUB dates back to the private electoral library, which was established around 1556. The selected objects presented here from our collections illustrate the magnificence of the original “Liberey”, while also tying in festivities, such as ceremonial acts and processions, hunts and music, which would later shape the “Florence of the Elbe” for centuries.
