In this thought-provoking address Reimagining the Global Majority: New Solidarities in a Changing World, Aghogho Akpome will examine how recent global developments have destabilized traditional narratives and created opportunities for new forms of connection across previously entrenched divides.
The lecture will explore a critical reimagining of the concept of the “global majority” beyond geographic and historical categorizations, emphasizing shared visions for a more equitable world.
Aghogho Akpome will trace the evolution of concepts such as “Third World” and “Global South” , reflecting on the historical significance of the 1955 Bandung Conference while considering how these frameworks might be innovatively modified to address contemporary challenges. Drawing from observations of global shifts, he will discuss emerging possibilities for solidarity that transcend conventional boundaries.
The keynote will also address the selective application of human rights discourse throughout history and invite attendees exercise to greater agency in framing global relationships rather than remaining “hostage to received constructions” of the world.
This lecture – followed by a panel discussion – presents an opportunity for scholars, students, and community members interested in global politics, postcolonial studies, human rights, and international solidarity movements to engage with these timely and important ideas.
