In addition to valuable historical maps (e.g. by Ptolemy, Münster, Ortelius, Mercator, Gerard de Jode and Blaeu), the SLUB’s Map Collection includes a focus on maps of Saxony and topographical maps of Germany and Europe. It also contains numerous panoramic views from the 17th to the 19th century. Within the past 10 years, the cartographic collection has grown by almost 40,000 items, bringing the total number of maps and views to 177,000.
Approximately 19,000 of the most important cartographical sources in the collection – especially those pertaining to Saxon history and regional studies – are available in high resolution digital images in the Map Forum. The Map Forum, hosted by the Deutsche Fotothek (kartenforum.deutschefotothek.de), is an information portal of libraries, museums and archives, primarily in Saxony. A project funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), which ended in 2011, made it possible for this forum to be expanded and developed.
