Contemporary Art at the SLUBto top

Ever since its establishment in 1556, collecting literature on art and art history has belonged to the SLUB Dresden’s tradition. In 1983, the library became the "Central Library for Art and Music of the GDR," following a pronouncement as early as 1966, which declared its function as a state collection focusing on the Visual Arts. Thus, even prior to 1990, the library was able to continually develop its collection of literature on contemporary art and art history.

In 1993, the special interest collection for “Contemporary Art since 1945, Photography, Industrial Design and Commercial Graphic Arts" (SSG 9.11) was established. This was made possible by a special German Research Foundation (DFG) program, which provides nationwide support to libraries in Germany (Committee on Scientific Library Services and Information Systems). The SLUB aims to keep its collection of national and international (European and North American) literature on these topics as complete as possible. Our goal is to have at least one copy of every academic publication available to library users in Germany. We intend to not only take the needs of current research into consideration, but to assess probable needs for literature in the future, and collect these accordingly (function as a “reservoir”).

The Special Interest Collection: Facts and Figuresto top

The special interest collection contains ca. 182,000 volumes and approximately 1,400 journals – among these, 713 are current periodicals, which can be researched by using the Special Interest Collection Catalog for Contemporary Art and the SLUB catalogue. Recent acquisitions can be found on the SLUB Website under Search/Recent Acquisitions.
Current exchange partnerships with national and international institutions help us continue to build our extensive collection of literature on contemporary art.

At the present time, the Special Interest Collection for Contemporary Art contains:

  • Ca. 182.000 monographs,
  • Including more than 68,800 monographs from overseas,
  • Approximately 50% of these cannot be found in any other German library
  • Roughly 20,000 directories (tables of contents, or TOCs), with 2,000 new TOCs annually
  • Annual acquisition of more than 9,000 volumes

The SLUB Dresden is a data supplier and partner to artlibraries.net, the Virtual Library for Art. This meta search engine offers access to more than 12.5 million art resources (as of December 2010), including books, journals, articles, reviews, online resources, as well as image archives and photographs in 12 German, 18 European and 6 American, Canadian and Australian libraries.

Special Interest Collections: A Joint Effortto top

Besides literature concerning photography, industrial design and commercial graphic arts, the special interest collection also includes the history of art since 1945 in Europe, USA and Canada. Central to our acquisition priorities is literature on contemporary art, which is essential for portraying international trends. Exhibition and collection catalogues are a main focus of acquisitions. However, other resources providing practical information for artists and designers (e.g. art and law, art market, design textbooks, current standards) have also become important additions to the collection.
